It helps "locate" the rear suspension and controls horizontal suspension travel. With age, the inner trailing arm bushing which attaches to the chassis can wear out. The second bushing pressed into the wheel carrier can also suffer from similar wear. If there is any play in the suspension the bushing need to be replaced. For the most part the trailing arm is replaced along with these bushings for good measure.
